In India, Eid al-Adha, a sacred Islamic festival marked by the ritual sacrifice of animals, was overshadowed by violent acts carried out by cow vigilantes. These self-proclaimed protectors of cows, mostly associated with Hindu extremist groups, have turned Muslim identity itself into a crime. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the ideological influence of the BJP’s Hindutva agenda has led to state policies that target religious minorities, particularly Muslims. As a result, religious freedom in India is under significant threat.
Hindutva Gangs Wreak Havoc Under Modi’s Patronage
This Eid al-Adha, India witnessed an alarming surge in cow vigilante violence. Backed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Hindutva groups roamed the streets, attacking Muslims for simply practicing their religious rights. Eid, a time for spiritual reflection and celebration, turned into a nightmare for many Indian Muslims who were subjected to harassment, physical attacks, and false accusations.
Muslims celebrating the festival were targeted even for transporting animal remains or purchasing sacrificial animals. The rise of these vigilante groups and their unchecked power has made Muslims feel unsafe in their own country, even on their most sacred days.
Hyderabad Incident: Truck Set Ablaze by Vigilantes
In Hyderabad’s Jalpally area, the situation turned violent the day after Eid. According to The Times of India, a group of cow vigilantes set fire to a truck carrying animal remains. They assaulted the driver, stole his mobile phone and cash, and even pelted stones at the police when they arrived on the scene. The attack was accompanied by Hindu religious slogans, a chilling reminder of the rising religious extremism in India.
Violence in Karnataka and Arrests in Madhya Pradesh
In the town of Kamalnagar, Karnataka, Hindutva extremists forced the closure of shops after alleging the slaughter of cows. Their actions created an atmosphere of fear and tension in the region. Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, authorities arrested seven Muslims and seized 32 kilograms of meat after accusing them of slaughtering a calf. These arrests came despite a lack of clear evidence and seemed driven by communal bias.
Heightened Tensions and Surveillance in Other States
In Bidar, Karnataka, four Muslims were arrested over similar accusations. According to Deccan Herald, the sacrifices were conducted peacefully, but arrests were made due to Hindutva groups pressuring the local police. In Mathura, pieces of meat found near an Eidgah (prayer ground) led to chaos, even though there was no proof that it was beef. Hindu organizations demanded immediate arrests, escalating religious tensions.
In Assam, more than sixteen Muslims were detained in five districts under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act. The act is often criticized for being selectively enforced against Muslims, particularly during Islamic festivals.
Odisha and the Dangerous Rise of Cow Vigilante Justice
In the Tirtol area of Odisha, three Muslim youths were arrested near the Jagannath Temple over allegations of cow slaughter. Police made the arrests under pressure from Hindutva goons, according to The Indian Express. In another incident in Abrasingh village, also in Odisha, three more Muslims were detained amid communal unrest deliberately provoked under the pretext of cow protection.
In Mathura again, eleven Muslims were arrested after police claimed to have found beef near an Eidgah. Scroll.in reported that this was part of a larger pattern of hyper-surveillance and arrests of Muslims during Eid.
Political Intimidation Against Muslim Leaders
The violence did not stop with ordinary citizens. Congress leader Shahjahan Mian, who had spoken in favor of the right to sacrifice animals on Eid, faced an attack at his home. According to The Indian Express, BJP supporters first filed a case against him and then stormed his residence, highlighting the ruling party’s use of intimidation and legal harassment against dissenters.

The Wire reported a shocking statistic: 97% of hate crimes over alleged cow protection occurred during Modi’s time in office. This reveals the disturbing trend of state complicity or, at best, indifference in the face of escalating violence. With both the police and political apparatus increasingly aligning with Hindutva forces, Indian Muslims find themselves more vulnerable than ever.

عیدالاضحیٰ کے موقع پر بھارت میں ہندوتوا غنڈوں نے کھلے عام دہشت مچائی۔ بی جے پی کی پشت پناہی سے یہ گروہ سڑکوں پر مسلمانوں کو قربانی کے عمل یا جانوروں کی باقیات لے جانے پر حملوں کا نشانہ بناتے رہے۔ یہ دن، جو مسلمانوں کے لیے روحانی اہمیت کا حامل ہوتا ہے، بھارتی مسلمانوں کے لیے خوف اور پریشانی میں بدل گیا۔
یہ حملے صرف جانور ذبح کرنے تک محدود نہ رہے بلکہ مسلمان شہریوں کو محض مشکوک حرکتوں یا مذہبی شناخت پر بھی ہراساں کیا گیا۔
حیدرآباد میں جانوروں کی باقیات لے جانے والی گاڑی جلادی گئی
ٹائمز آف انڈیا کے مطابق، حیدرآباد کے علاقے جلب پلی میں عید کے اگلے دن گؤ رکھشکوں نے جانوروں کی باقیات لے جانے والی گاڑی کو آگ لگا دی۔ ڈرائیور کو مارا پیٹا گیا، اس کا موبائل فون اور نقدی چھین لی گئی، اور بعد میں پولیس پر بھی پتھراؤ کیا گیا۔ اس حملے کے دوران ہندو مذہبی نعرے بھی لگائے گئے۔
کرناٹکا میں دکانیں بند کرائیں، مدھیہ پردیش میں گرفتاریاں
کرناٹکا کے شہر کمل نگر میں گائے ذبح کرنے کے الزام میں ہندوتوا انتہا پسندوں نے علاقے میں خوف پھیلا کر دکانیں بند کرائیں۔ مدھیہ پردیش میں سات مسلمانوں کو بچھڑا ذبح کرنے کے الزام میں گرفتار کرلیا گیا اور 32 کلو گوشت ضبط کرلیا گیا، حالانکہ شواہد کی کمی کے باوجود ان پر کارروائی کی گئی۔
دیگر ریاستوں میں کشیدگی اور نگرانی میں اضافہ
ریاست کرناٹکا کے علاقے بیدر میں چار مسلمانوں کو گرفتار کیا گیا جبکہ متھرا میں عید گاہ کے قریب گوشت ملنے پر ہنگامہ کھڑا کردیا گیا۔ بغیر کسی تصدیق کے ہندو تنظیموں نے مقدمات درج کرانے کا مطالبہ کیا۔
آسام میں عید کے موقع پر پانچ اضلاع میں 16 سے زائد مسلمانوں کو مویشی تحفظ ایکٹ کے تحت گرفتار کیا گیا۔ یہ قانون زیادہ تر مسلمانوں کے خلاف استعمال ہوتا ہے، خاص طور پر ان کے مذہبی تہواروں کے دوران۔
اڑیشہ میں گائے کے نام پر انتہا پسندی
اڑیشہ کے علاقے ترٹول میں جگن ناتھ مندر کے قریب گائے ذبح کرنے کے الزام میں تین مسلمان نوجوان گرفتار کیے گئے۔ پولیس نے یہ کارروائی ہندوتوا غنڈوں کے دباؤ میں آکر کی۔ اڑیشہ کے ہی ایک اور گاؤں عبرسنگھ میں بھی گائے کے نام پر فرقہ وارانہ کشیدگی کے بعد تین مسلمان گرفتار کیے گئے۔
متھرا میں ایک اور واقعے میں، پولیس نے عید گاہ کے قریب مبینہ گوشت کی موجودگی پر 11 مسلمانوں کو گرفتار کرلیا۔ سکرول ان کے مطابق، وہاں پولیس کی سخت نگرانی جاری ہے۔
قربانی کی حمایت کرنے والے لیڈر پر حملہ
کانگریس کے رہنما شاہجہان میاں نے جب عید کے موقع پر قربانی کے حق میں آواز بلند کی تو ان کے گھر پر حملہ کیا گیا۔ انڈین ایکسپریس کے مطابق، بی جے پی کی مخالفت پر مقدمہ درج کرکے ان پر حملہ کیا گیا، جو اس بات کا ثبوت ہے کہ بی جے پی کس طرح سیاسی انتقام کو استعمال کرتی ہے۔
97 فیصد گائے کے نام پر جرائم مودی کے دور میں
